2018-2020 Events

In 2019-2020 Hemispheric South/s Research Initiative (HS/s) launched a yearlong book talk series, entitled Race and the Humanities focused on recently published or forthcoming work focused on race and racism, literature, philosophy, power, history, and belonging from the intimate to the global. The book talk series featured scholars and writers such as Cherrie Moraga, Felice Blake, and Stephanie Batiste.

During 2019-2020, HS/s continued to build a collaborative interdisciplinary intellectual community invested in thinking critically about race, ethnicity, nation, culture, performance, affect, and power through its yearlong, co-organized reading group with UCSB English’s American Cultures in a Global Context Center (ACGCC) focused on critical race and decolonial theory.

This year, HS/s also co-sponsored the “Drawing Diversity” Graduate Comix Symposium and the American Indian and Indigenous Collective (AIIC) 7th Annual Symposium, “The Body as Archive.”
